Dear Ellie and HUT -
I'm selfish. Your dad and I brought you into this world because we wanted a family. We have never felt so much love like we did on the days that we first gazed into each of your eyes. At the same time, the world around us seems like it's unraveling. Shooting after shooting. Bullying. Suicides. Abuse. War. Drugs. Natural disasters. Chemical weapons. Ignorance.
This world is a crazy, scary place. Yet, I still want to believe that for all of the bad that is displayed on our televisions every evening, there are a million acts of kindness taking place to help balance the world out.
Your father is a religious man. Your mother is not. It's that diversity, tolerance and love that I wish upon you both. Gay or straight. Christian, Non-Christian or Athiest. No matter the race (especially considering your are both already "mixed" children). I want happy children. Children who look and hope for the best. Who are tolerant, accepting and, above all, open minded to those who are not the same as you.
There will always be evil. There always has been. But, just as your dad and I have, my hope is that you rise above this. Never sell yourself short. And always trust your gut.
Life is precious. Life will pass you by before you know it. And while the world seems like a mess sometimes, all around us, you two are the beauty I see. Every. Single. Day.
Even when the inconsiderate, unkind and selfish surround you - seek the best in them all. But always put your family, your spouse and yourself first. Nothing is more important than that.
