Daughters

Nothing scares me more than the fact that in just a few short months I'll be the mother of a daughter. Not because I don't like girls, but because I am one and I know what we can do. We can love harder than anyone else, we can fight harder than anyone else, and we come with a lot of emotions. Good, bad and ugly ones.

You know how they say you get back tenfold how you were with your  parents?

Yeah, I'm a little scared.

But I'm also thrilled. Thrilled that I get the chance to cultivate a relationship with my own daughter like the one I have with my mom. My mom was the matron of honour in my wedding. She's my best friend. While we don't always see eye-to-eye and we definitely have our ugly moments, there is no one that I get along with better than my mom.

Sorry U.

I'm thrilled that I get to see how the U shines as a dad to a girl, like he's shined with HUT. He's amazing with his nieces, so I can only imagine how he'll be with Ellie. Although I know she'll have her daddy wrapped around her little finger from the moment she lets out her first cry. So bad cop I'll happily be for a while in our family dynamic, if need be.

When I was pinning one of my fifty bajillion pins for the day last weekend, I came across a one directed towards fathers and daughters. While I do have a relationship with my own dad that isn't terrible, I wish that he'd read this list before I came into the world. And I'm so glad that I found it for the U. Not because I don't think that he'll be an awesome dad to a little girl, but because I want him to know the importance of all of these items.

Because they are so important.

So, do yourself a favor and go check out this post for yourself. While it's directed towards fathers, moms could probably take a few tips from them as well.

  1. Decided to click through from Google Reader. Lovely post. Congrats on your daughter!! I'm due with our daughter in 5 short weeks and I'm nervous as heck! You summed up my feelings perfectly and more articulately than I ever could.

  2. I love the list. I am expecting a daughter myself, and I am so excited to see my husband as a father to a little girl. I love seeing his face when we watch the car commercials where the father sees his little girl asking for the car keys! I know he will be wrapped around her little finger.
