Now, I'm sure that this post is going to piss a few people off, so let me preface this by saying - I realize that not everyone has the same sense of style. Some people may really like the types of clothing that I'm going to list below as things I don't care for. That's great! If everyone shared my opinion, then we'd all look exactly the same and have nothing original about ourselves.
So if I offend you, just know that as much as I don't care for how you dress YOUR child, you probably hate how I dress mine. To each their own. Amen, hallelujah, let's get on with the show.
From day one I've talked about my disdain for clothes with sayings on them. "Mommy's little helper." "Daddy's big guy." I can't stand them. Sometimes that really sucks too, because the Carter's overalls that have the cute fabric are just not purchase-worthy for me thanks to the "CROCODILE'S ROCK!" embroidered on the chest.
{ I know, I know, some people love this stuff, and sometimes I want to cave into the cute sayings too, but I just. can't. do. it. }
And what is it with boys that makes designers think that everything has to say "VROOM!" or "PROPERTY OF ABC ATHLETIC COMPANY?" I mean, we love us some cars and sports in our household, but why is it so hard to find nice, simple separates that don't have sayings or athletic connotations?
I also am not a fan of the Jon-Jon/smocked apparel. It's too preppy for my taste and I'm not the "let's initial every piece of clothing my child owns so that every person who sees them will know their name" "I'm going to put my kid in an outfit themed for every occasion" crowd. Someone gave me one of those outfits for HUT and he wore it for his Easter pic - quite possibly the only time I'll ever let my child wear something of the sort. He looked damn cute, but my boy is a bit too rough and tumble to be wearing something so "pretty" all of the time. Now when I have a girl? I can't say that the case will be the same for her, but for HUT, this is how things go.
I do, however, subscribe to the whole "I'm going to dress my child like a mini-man" style. SO many people hate this, but it's who I am. If it's striped, I'm buying it. And now that it's getting cool enough to wear jeans? OMG I DIE. Button up sweaters with dress shirts underneath? I'm all about it. And I'm pretty sure that when HUT is big enough to fit into Crew Cuts, the U is screwed. At least in the money department. And now we're entering into the shoe phase which is exciting and a pain in the ass all at the same time.
Why?
BECAUSE BOY SHOES ARE UGLY.
Luckily, I have a great mommy support system that lends all of their advice to me when needed and I was introduced to the Shoe Zoo on Ebay who makes knock-off Robeez for a fraction of the price. I found two pairs of plain shoes that I think will work until we need to find hard soles for HUT.
He also has a pair of Pumas that were gifted to us, as well as some Vans and these cute loafers that I bought on Zulily for $6 during their blowout sale.
So, there's my rant on dressing my son. It's a pain to find clothes for him that fit our style, but it is do-able. You just have to be willing to put in a little bit of leg work. Now that I've gone on my tangent, I thought I'd share my main places that I shop for the little guy.
Gap (only on sale, that place is too pricey)
Zulily (when they have their blowout sales it's awesome, I scored about 25 things for $100 last sale)
Probably the basic places anyone would think to shop. I also have a hard time paying full retail for his clothes - he grows out of everything SO fast. It just makes no sense to spend as much on his clothing as I do my own when I know that in 2-3 months it'll be packed up in the closet for the next child.

My mother in law has given baby D that exact Major Hunk T (along with the matching camo leggings) not once, but twice!! Each time I tossed it in the good will bin. Only when she produced another shirt that said "stud muffin" did I have a conversation with her (oops, I mean forced hubby to) telling her how I feel about degrading messages. I mean, would she purchase a T for a little girl that said "Daddy's little hottie"? (Actually, she might!)
ReplyDeleteI agree on the boy clothes. One of my best friends has a boy and I have such trouble finding him cute outfits! Girl clothes, NO PROBLEM, but the boy, seriously, someone needs to start designing cute baby boy clothes!
ReplyDeleteI could not agree more. I've already made a rule (and been pretty obnoxiously clear with loved ones): NO WORDS on ANY baby clothes. I think they're so gross and tacky. "Mommy's Stud" or "Daddy's Princess" all fall into the same catetory for me. (And dare I be even more obnoxious and say it all just feels white trash to me?)
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on the little-man style...and I am a sucker for stripes. I actually pulled a couple of embellishments off of some carter's stuff we were gifted...cut a few tiny stitches and bu-bye "momma's little cutie"! It makes me so mad when I see something cute ruined by a dumb slogan.
ReplyDeleteCompletely Agree! I haven't bought anything with the ridiculous logos/sayings but I've been gifted some. He wears them, but it's usually at home or the extra 'daycare' outfit. I love 'little-man' style and love jeans/shoes on babies, so cute. I wish 'cute' boys clothes were much easier to find!
ReplyDeletethose little loafers are amazingly adorable. i totally agree w you on the sayings on the clothes. in my very humble non mom opinion i think they're pretty tacky. i don't even like the dog shirts that have stupid sayings on them.
ReplyDeleteI totally feel you. I hate all the stuff with sayings on it. Ruins a perfectly good outfit. And my kid looks awesome in stripes so that's what he wears most. I just wish I could find more plain stuff. And I can't wait for shoes. Little mini Converses, here I come!
